In Space: Sculptural Awareness

ARTIST’S RECEPTION: June 20, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The public is invited to our summer exhibit, In Space: sculptural awareness, at the Gallery on 16th in the Racine Business Center 1405 16th Street.

In Space is an exhibit of the three-dimensional works of local artists: Patti Fallen (ceramics), Bradford Lee (alabaster & chlorite), Bruce Niemi (stainless steel & bronze) and John Zehren (cardboard).

Curated by gallery director Samira Gdisis. In contrast to prior shows in Gallery on 16th this show investigates sculpture as art, having mass, filling space, creating shadow and pushing the viewer to engage with the work.

In the Introduction of the first volume of Marilyn Stockstad’s textbook, “Art History,” the author asks “What is a viewer’s role and responsibility (in looking at art)? The answer…”As viewers we enter into an agreement with artists, who in turn make special demands on us. We re-create the works of art for ourselves as we bring them our own experiences, our intelligence, our knowledge, and even our prejudices.”

In Space invites the viewer to experience the space within the gallery moving amongst the sculpture and bringing your own ideas along. The artists’ work often engages with the exhibit theme elegantly, sometimes playfully.

This event is free to the public and family friendly. Light refreshments will be served and music provided by guitarist Luke Baird.

Regular Gallery on 16th hours are Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
